Champions League - Deportivo la Coruna 2 Hamburg SV 1

First Published: Sep 19, 2000

A late winner from substitute Lionel Scaloni saw Spanish Liga champions Deportivo La Coruna ease past Hamburg SV in a poor game.

For once Scaloni found space in the penalty area as the clock ran down and he had time to drive the ball in from in front of goal after a clipped cross from Mauro Silva defeated the German defence.

In the 43rd minute Deportivo had taken the lead when goalkeeper Hans Joerg Butt mishandled a free kick from Fran Gonzalez and fumbled the shot into the path of Walter Pandiani who tucked the ball in.

Iranian star Mehdi Mahdavikia set up Hamburg's equaliser with a chipped cross for Sergei Barbarez to head into goal.
