AS Monaco suffered an early set back against Glasgow Rangers and could not create the chances to get back into the match.
Rangers took the lead in the 7th minute when the Scottish champions changed the point of the attack to send the ball to Artur Numan who passed to Giovanni van Bronckhorst who swept a 30 metre shot swerving and high into the net past Stephane Porato.
Then the French team took control of the game but were unable to get past the Rangers defence to make good chances despite poor performances from Ronald De Boer and Barry Ferguson which meant Rangers lost control of midfield.
Rangers started to rely on using Michael Mols on the break but despite his willing running Monaco were able to construct some neat approach play. The Glasgow side rode their luck in the second half and mounted a seige defence but held out as Monaco failed to get enough chances on target.
