Champions League - Galatasary 3 Glasgow Rangers 2

First Published: Sep 27, 2000

Galatasary put Rangers through a torrid second half with Jardel again on target.

Rangers made an early tactical change to take the heat out of any early Galatasary pressure.

Tugay - who spent twelve years with Gala before his move to Glasgow - was started as a sweeper by Dick Advocaat but the Dutch coach pushed him in front of the defence after fifteen minutes and Rangers looked much more comfortable.

In heavy rain and with a sticky pitch Rangers had the best chance of the first half. Barry Ferguson was allowed a free header from a croner but his flashing connection did not go on target.

Rangers almost gifted a lead to Gala two minutes before half time when Lorenzo Amoruso accidentally slapped a clearance at goal which Stefan Klos had to turn onto the cross bar.

It all went wrong for Rangers in the second half.

Bulent Akim hit in a cross shot in the 56th minute followed up four minutes later by a stunning Hakan Unsal shot from 25 metres which dipped into the net.

Jardel did very little in open play but was on hand in the 77th minute when he was given too much space on the edge of the penalty area to hit a shot on the drop past Klos.

Substitute Andrei Kanchelskis scored from a deflected near post header two minutes later after a powerful run and cross from Artur Numan. Rangers finished very strongly but shots by Kanchelskis and Van Bronckhorst were parried by Taffarel but the Dutchman launched a great injury time free kick into the net but it was not enough.
