2002 World Cup - Chile 0 Uruguay 1

First Published: Apr 25, 2001

Uruguay needed an own goal on his debut from Italo Diaz to defeat Chile in Santiago.

The visiting team were poor though and need to improve if they are to seriously challenge for a place at the finals for the first time since 1986 while Chile dominated most of this game but are still struggling.

Uruguay remain sixth in the South American qualifying group with 18 points and are now one point behind fifth-placed Colombia who were held to a 2-2 draw by bottom country Venezuela. Chile are eighth with only 10 points from 12 games and have no real chance of making the finals.

It was Diaz who got the decisive touch on a driven cross from an Alvaro Recoba free kick to clip the ball into his own net with only 12 minutes gone after he tried to clear a Federico Magallenes header.

Ivan Zamorano came close to equalising twice in the second half with headers but Uruguay's Fabian Carini was their best player in the game and produced good saves to defy the America star.
