AEK Athens have asked coach Yiannis Pathiakakis to resign after a 6-1 hammering by city rivals Panathinaikos in the Greek Cup.
If Pathiakakis does not resign then he will be sacked by the Greek club whose ground was shut for four matches earlier this week after crowd violence forced the first leg tie of the match with Panathinaikos to be abandoned.
AEK forfeited that match by order of the Greek federation but it hardly mattered last night as Panathinaikos destroyed AEK's defence.
OFI Crete manager Dutchman Egen Gerard has already been approached as a potential replacement with veteran striker Toni Savevski of Macedonia also linked with the job this morning.
The 6-1 loss was AEK's worse defeat for twenty years and Panathinaikos rested five players for the game. Pathiakakis was appointed a year ago when Yugoslav coach Ljubisa Tumbakovic was fired. he took them to third place in the league last season and a UEFA Cup place
