South Africa sealed their qualification for the 2002 World Cup finals on July 1st but rounded out their matches in group E with a 2-0 win over Malawi in Durban.

Tall defender Matthew Booth put the home side in front after only six minutes when he ripped a downward header from close range straight at goalkeeper Navigator Dzinkambani who fluffed the save and allowed the ball through him and into the net.

Bradley August ended the scoring in the 16th minute when he stretched to turn in a Sibusiso Zuma cross.

South Africa meet Malawi again next Saturday in the quarter-finals of the regional Cosafa Castle Cup and gave a fiftieth cap to popular but violent defender Doctor Khumalo in a game of poor finishing by both sides which South Africa controlled.
