2002 World Cup - Sierra Leone 0 Liberia 1

First Published: Jul 14, 2001

George Weah scored the winning goal after returning to the Liberia squad following his threat to quit two weeks ago.

Liberia beat Sierra Leone 1-0 in Freetown and now have a chance of reaching the 2002 World Cup finals.

Liberia are back at the top of African group B with 15 points after their eighth and final match.

Nigeria are on 13 points and need a home win against Ghana in two weeks to win the single place on offer at next year's World Cup finals in Japan and South Korea.

Weah came on as a 55th minute substitute and headed the winner from an inswinging corner in the 73rd minute.

He was only playing after a personal plea from Liberian president Charles Taylor to stay in the squad after a home defeat two weeks ago by Ghana saw Liberian fans abuse the veteran striker prompting his decision to quit as player/coach.
