First Published: Jul 26, 2001

Four red cards in Pereira marred this semi final as each team lost two players.

The trouble was mainly caused by Uruguay whose bruising style of play has carried them a long way in the rescheduled Copa

Mexico reached the Copa final after an Alberto Garcia Aspe penalty in the 67th minute and they had taken the lead in the 13th minute when Jared Borgetti jinked past a defender to hit a cross shot from the edge of the penalty area.

Uruguay equalised in the 32nd minute when Richard Morales headed in a free kick and then the game turned violent.

Carlos Morales was sent off for kicking out at Gerardo Torrado in the 43rd minute to reduce Uruguay to ten men and this definitely helped Mexico to push on in the second half and prove worthy winners..

Borgetti fluffed the chance of a second goal when he met a cross free of markers but hit his hasty shot wide but Antonio de Nigris was pushed over the earn the penalty which veteran Aspe calmly tucked away.

Garcia Aspe was then sent off for his second booking in the 86th minute as the game turned ugly again.

Olivera was red carded for punching Manuel Vidrio who was also sent off for seeeming to provoke the attack.

Hosts Colombia and Honduras will meet in the other semi-final in Manizales today.
