2002 World Cup - Andorra 0 Republic of Ireland 3

First Published: Mar 28, 2001

The Republic of Ireland are now very well placed to challenge group two big guns Portugal and Holland after this comfortable win.

Coach Mick McCarthy has produced an efficient team who run hard for each other and they were not overwhelmed by a sparsely populated Camp Nou stadium.

With Portugal hosting Holland later tonight the Irish are able to cash in on mistakes by the more fancied teams.

They did enough to win and were given the lead by an Ian Harte penalty after Roy Keane tried to run the ball past goalkeeper Alfonso Sanchez on one of his raiding runs from midfield but he was brought down.

Kevin Kilbane reached a loose ball to fire in in the 76th minute and a low drive from Matt Holland towards the end of the match on 86 minutes sealed the win. The Irish have 11 points from five games but Portugal can reclaim the lead in group two later on.
