2002 World Cup - Wales 1 Ukraine 1

First Published: Mar 28, 2001

Andriy Shevchenko scored a second half equaliser to help Ukraine recover from an early set back against Wales.

The home team had taken the lead in the 10th minute when Gary Speed had crossed for John Hartson to hammer a volley into the roof of the net for his third goal in two matches for Mark Hughes' side.

But Ukraine then strated to get into the match with Shevchenko coming close with a cross shot after he cut inside from the right hand flank and then he struck a sweet shot on the run against the angle of post and bar.

The Milan star ended the first half by sending a close range effort over the crossbar but in the 49th minute he hit the target after he carried the balldown the left wing to hit an accurate cross shot into the net.

Wales performed well on the night and almost won the game at the death when Coventry forward Craig Bellamy was clear on goal but drove his shot at the goalkeeper.
