Spain 2 France 1First Published: Mar 28, 2001Spain scored a rare win over France in this meaningless friendly in Valencia. A power header from Ivan Helguera and a well worked goal from Fernando Morientes gave Spain a 2-1 win over world champions France and handed the World Cup holders their first defeat in ten matches. Spain opened the scoring five minutes before half time with Helguera heading past keeper Lionel Letizi after a great cross from Gaizka Mendieta playing on his home ground. In the 49th minute Real Madrid striker Fernando Morientes ended a silky move by curling a shot into the far corner of the net. France got a consolation five minutes from time with David Trezeguet springing the offside trap as he ran onto a chip from Thierry Henry to drive past Santiago Canizares.
