2002 World Cup - Algeria 1 Morocco 2First Published: May 04, 2001Morocco have maintained their unbeaten record with a 2-1 win over Algeria in an Algiers 202 World Cup qualifier. The Moroccans now lead group C with 12 points from six games and have yet to lose a match. Algeria needed to win this home game to stand any chance of qualifying for next year's finals. But Algeria started well and hit the bar in the 3rd minute with a header from Rakik Essaifi and they took the lead in the eight minute when Abdelhafid Tasfaout hit a rising shot from an angle at the edge of the penalty area. But the Algerians could not hold onto their lead and Rachid Benmahmoud equalised in the 16th minute after a free kick caused confusion and he hit a shot in from close range. The winning goal summed up the ill-luck suffered by Algeria in this World Cup campaign. With only two minutes gone of the second half Gharib Amzine launched a speculative cross into the penalty area and Algerian goalkeeper Hisham Mezair misjudged the flight of the ball and got underneath the cross which ended up in the top corner of the net.
