Confederations Cup - Japan 3 Canada 0

First Published: May 31, 2001

Japan found it easy in the second half to beat Canada at the start of their Confederations Cup campaign but struggled to make anything of the game in the first period.

Shinji Ono hit the first goal in the 57th minute and broke open the Canadian defence with a driven free kick from twenty metres and three minutes later Akinori Nishizawa sealed the win when he met a dipping cross from the right wing with a header.

Ono was the best Japanese player on show and he made the 88th minute goal for Hiroaki Morishima who collected his pass and rounded Canadian goalkeeper Craig Forrest to score with ease.
