Newcastle want to sign Seedorf

First Published: Dec 04, 2000

Newcastle United are in talks to buy Inter midfielder Clarence Seedorf.

The Premiership club have set aside£7 million to complete the deal which is already underway after talks last week between the two clubs.

Seedorf won the European Cup in 1996 with Ajax before a move to Real Madrid where he helped them lift the 1998 European title.

He joined Inter last season, a year ago, after then coach Marcello Lippi demanded his signing as one of his first purchases at the Milan club.

At first Real were reluctant to sell but a deal went through but Seedorf is regarded as an asset by Inter who can get cash for him in the Transfer market despite his lack of form for the Dutch side in recent seasons.

New Inter coach Marco Tardelli is looking to move out some of Lippi's signings and does not want to put Seedorf in the first team.
