South Africa's Bartlett joins Charlton

First Published: Nov 24, 2000

Charlton Athletic have signed South African striker Shaun Bartlett to add to their contingent from Bafana Bafana.

The London club completed the signing of former South African international defender Mark Fish two weeks ago and now the 28 year old Bartlett has signed until the end of January from Swiss club FC Zurich.

Charlton have been looking to add to their strikers after injuries to Andy Hunt and Clive Mendinca have removed them from first team contention this season. Finn Jonatan Johansson was signed from Glasgow Rangers on the eve of the new season and the 28 year old Bartlett will arrive next week to play a three month loan spell with a view to agreeing a transfer.

Charlton were lined with former Rangers and Tottenham target John Hartson who is now at Wimbledon last week but manager Alan Curbishley did not want to meet Hartson's wage demands and pay a club record £5 million for the Welshman whose last two possible transfers have collapsed over poor fitness.
