Arena and Reyna get World Cup bans

First Published: Sep 15, 2000

US coach Bruce Arena and Glasgow Rangers star Claudio Reyna have been suspended for next month's 2002 World Cup qualifier against Costa Rica.

The FIFA Disciplinary Committee acted after both men confronted a match official at the 2-1 defeat in Costa Rica on July 23rd.

Reyna has been suspended for two matches while Arena has been hit with a three game ban. The coach can still pick the team but cannot watch matches.

The pair complained about a decision as Costa Rica scored their winning goal. Both Eddie Lewis and Ernie Stewart are already suspended for the October 11th game at Colombus, Ohio and the US lie second in a four team group with seven points. The top two teams qualify for the final six nation group to fight out CONCACAF qualification next year.
