Voller: "Ronaldo beat us and Brazil are worthy champions"

First Published: Jun 30, 2002

Germany coach Rudi Voller says Brazilian match winning star Ronaldo was the difference between the two sides at the World Cup final.

Ronaldo scored both goals to clinch a fifth world title for Brazil with two well taken strikes midway through the second half after Germany more than held their own in the first half.

"Brazil were worthy winners," said 42 year old Voller after the game.

"We saw Brazil show their individual class.

"We played very well in the first 35 minutes and we felt we were controlling the game.

"But as the game went on, we saw their great individual talent, they are so strong in one-on-one situations and in quick passing and that began to give us more and more problems."

"We began the second half well too but unlike in other matches we did not get that first goal and their class began to show," the 1990 World Cup winner said.

"There's no doubt that Brazil are worthy world champions. They are tough to play against, they go forward so well and they have a good goalkeeper.

"We have got to be happy with what we achieved here. We didn't expect to reach the final before the tournament.

"We owe a lot to Oliver Kahn and don't forget we had a lot of injured players in this tournament."

Germany will host the 2006 finals and saw Brazilian goalkeeper Marcos produce an outstanding save to tip a rising free kick from Oliver Neuville onto the post on the hour mark.
