Midfielder Alexander Khatskevich opened the scoring when he made the most of a fluff by goalkeeper Paul Jones, who let the ball slip from his hands, and the Belarus player was on hand to head neatly into the goal.

Valentin Belkevich, author of the pass which made the first goal, scored the second which was a just reward to a superb performance. He carried the ball and hit a low drive which gave Jones no chance.

Wales complicated their situation when new Coventry City signing Craig Bellamy was sent off for aiming a punch at Roma defender Sergei Gurenko in the 66th minute. The last minute goal scored by Gary Speed served for nothing at all in coach Mark Hughes' debut as coach of the national team in a competitive match.
