Uruguay needed luck and faith in their negative tactics to dump late entrants Costa Rica out of the Copa America.
The Costa Ricans saw a goal ruled out for offside ruled out that could have changed the match.
Paolo Wanchope was level with the last defender when he moved forward to score from a cross but ten minutes later and with only four minutes to go Uruguay hit the winning goals when Pablo Lima sent a low free kick through the Costa Rican defensive wall as it jumped to try and block a high shot and the ball skidded into the net but only after Costa goalkeeper Erick Lonnis had almost saved it.
The attacking play of the Costa team in heavy rain looked to have the edge through most of the game against Uruguay.
Wanchope scored his fifth goal of the tournament when he scored from close range in the 51st minute.
But Uruguay were level when Colombian referee Oscar Ruiz awarded a penalty in the 61st minute for a foul on Carlos Maria Morales which Lemos drove into the corner of the net.
Manchester City striker Wanchope - the only player at the devalued Copa to make a great impression so far - is now looking to set up a transfer to Boca Juniors.
