First Published: Jun 06, 2001

Ukraine flopped at home to draw with Wales afetr a late equaliser from Mark Pembridge gave coach Mark Hughes his best result so far as national team coach.

The Ukraine team led after 44 minutes when Hennady Zubov scored with a drive but this game was much closer than expected with the home team failing to create the chances they needed to kill off the Welsh team.

Pembridge made them pay with an 80th minute shot from a loose ball that came through a crowd of players to go beyond an unsighted Olexander Shovkovskly in the Ukraine goal.

The home team managed to send Andriy Shevchenko clear twice in the late stages but he failed to make the most of difficult chances and Ryan Giggs almost won the tie for Wales with a cross shot in injury time which Shovkovsky had to save with his legs.

Ukraine have 10 points and trail Belarus by two points after they drew 1-1 with Norway in Oslo.
