2002 World Cup - New Zealand 7 Vanuatu 0

New Zealand have won through to face Australia on the Oceania 2002 World Cup qualifying play-off after hammering Vanuatu 7-0 with three goals from striker Vaughan Coveny.

New Zealand will now face Australia over two legs with the winners playing the team which finishes fifth in the South American qualifying group in a November play-off to deide the last qualifying place at the 2002 finals in Japan and Korea.

Wellington on June 20th will see the first leg of the lay-off between New Zealand and Frank Farina's Australian team.

New Zealand's Mark Buron forced the referee Les Irivine from the field with a cut head after they accidentally collided in the second half. Irvine was relaced by fourth official Edward Lennie and needed eight stiches in a cut above the eye.

By then Coveny had ripped up the Vanuatu defence and scored with a ow drive in the 2nd minute before reaching crosses in the 7th and 29th minutes.

Shots from Chris Jackson and Arran Lines followed to give New Zealand a 5-0 lead and Mark Burton and Ivan Vicelich scored from close range to ease New Zealand through the Oceania group two qualifiers.
