Parma AC want Yepes to replace lost Thuram

First Published: Jun 20, 2001

Parma AC have bid £8 million to sign Colombian defender Mario Yepes from River Plate.

The Buenos Aires club are not keen to sell striker Javier Saviola but have £20 million debts which mean the centre back could be sold off after interest in the player started two months ago from SS Lazio.

But now Parma - who sold star defender Lilian Thuram to Juventus on Monday - need to strengthen their back line as they fight to keep Italian international Fabio Cannavaro away from AS Roma and goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon from joining Juventus.

The 25 year old Yepes has a contract which is partly owned by agent Gustavo Mascardi and he will be handling the bidding war that could break out over the highly-rated Colombia.
