2002 World Cup - Honduras 3 Mexico 1

First Published: Jun 21, 2001

Mexico crashed again to World Cup defeat in Honduras thanks to a hat-trick from Carlos Pavon.

The Mexicans now need serious improvement if they are to reach next year's finals but they do host old rivals the US on July 1st which often galvanises their team.

But this was their second defeat in five days conceding seven goals in the process and it is now the end for coach Enrique Meza. Mexico have lost six matches in a row under him and he will be fired by the weekend unless he resigns.

It is a different story for Honduras who are now second in the CONCACAF group but still trail leaders the US by five points after five games.

Pavon was free of his markers from the start of the match but did not score untl the 32nd minute when Pavon controlled a header from a corner kick and let it drop off his chest to shoot in.

Amado Guevara then hit a post with a free kick but Pavon hit his second in the 52nd minute with a header from a driven cross and scored his third from a penalty kick twelve minutes later after returning goalkeeper Jorge Campos had pulled down David Suarez. Substitute Victor Ruiz scored rom close range in the 86th minute minute but it was far too late to rescue another shambolic display.
