Beckham stays quiet on Scholes row

First Published: Nov 08, 2001

England captain David Beckham refused to comment on team mate Paul Scholes' future after the midfielder was fined by Manchester United in a dispute with manager Sir Alex Fergusn.

"To be honest it's not something I really want to go into," said Beckham. "I don't really know what's gone on. It's between the manager and the player."

Scholes is due to start for England in central midfield on Saturday in the friendly against Sweden but was dropped for United's defeat at Liverpool on Sunday.

Scholes then refused to play in a Worthington Cup defeat at Arsenal the following night and has been hit with a £100,000 fine.

Beckham dismissed the defeat by Liverpool:

"It doesn't bother me. Whenever we draw or lose a game it's a crisis at Man United but I don't see it being a problem," Beckham told 'Sky Sports'.

"It's always disappointing losing big games and losing to Liverpool was disappointing because of the way we played but at the end of the day it's just one game."

But the Scholes affair at Unuited could hve long term implications.

Juventus and Inter have both been keen in the last year to sign the midfielder who has been forced to play out of position by the arrival of Juan Sebastian Veron and United in July.

The 26 year old has suffered loss of form and confidence and was dropped for United's Premiership defeat at Liverpool on Sunday as manager Sir Alex Ferguson abandoned his 4-1-4-1 formation.

Scholes was the subject of a £25 million bid from Inter last year but he is not keen to leave England.

He now faces a possible exit from the English champions with rebellion by the docile attacking midfielder yet another bad sign for United boss Ferguson in his last season as the club's manager.

Juventus could offer cash for Scholes or Czech star Pavel Nedved or Edgar Davids in a swap.

United have previously been keen to sign both players with Nedved a transfer target at Euro 2000 when he was at SS Lazio.
