Portugal sealed the expected place in the 2002 World Cup finals with an easy win over Estonia in Lisbon.
The Portuguese needed goal difference to hold off the challenge of the Irish Republic but there was little doubt that a win tonight was the bare minimum to protect with a plus nine goal difference advantage.
Joao Pinto made up for the slow start by the hosts with a close range header and Fiorentina star Nuno Gomes was put clear for a low finish by Simao Sabrosa.
Pauleta started the party in the 58th minute with a low drive and Luis Figo set up Gomes for his second goal with a far post header seven minutes later. Simao crossed for Figo to finish with a rising shot close to the end.
