World Cup 2002: Costa Rica 0 Mexico 0

First Published: Oct 09, 2001

Third in the table Mexico were disappointed to only manage a 0-0 draw against already qualified Costa Rica on Sunday. Mexico were under fire right from the start however, as the Costa Rican forwards, Ronaldo Fonseca and Hernan Medford fired several volleys giving Oscar Perez a busy time in the Mexican goal. Close shots at 17 and 25 minutes by Medford tested Perez. Gomez also shot high at 18 minutes. Mexico's best chance came from Rodriguez at the 21st minute as he missed a header. The match was marred by fighting and saw both teams down to 10 men near the end of the second half as Mexico's Jesus Arellano and Costa Rica's Wilmer Lopez earned red cards in the 82nd minute. Mexico need to draw against Honduras in November to qualify.
