First Published: Jan 31, 2002

The US defeated holders Canada 4-2 on penalties to reach the Gold Cup final.

They now face Costa Rica on Sunday after this drab 0-0 draw in Pasadena finally produced noteworthy incidents as Tottenham goalkeeper Kasey Keller palmed away two Canadian spot kicks to win the semi final.

The US dominated the game with frequent shots most of which were well wide of the target.

It was left to Landon Donovan, Brian McBride, Jeff Agoos and Clint Mathis to score against Canadian goalkeeper Lars Hirschfeld who was his side's best performer on the night but his team mates Kevin McKenna and Tam Nsaliwa both saw their penalties saved.

The best action of the semi final came in the 54th minute when a frantic Hirschfeld and his defender Jason DeVos deflected four shots in a row to keep the score 0-0 with Josh Wolff starting the melee by hitting the post from close range.

Clint Mathis made his return to the US side after six month out with a knee injury and he could start for the US on Sunday who are now preparing for their fourth Gold Cup final.
