First Published: Jun 14, 2002

Success and failure for the United States all in one as a defeat meant nothing to them and they go through to the last 16 of the World Cup finals.

Despite conceding three goals to Poland including two goals in the first seven minutes, the US go through by virtue of nine-man Portugal losing to South Korea.

Emmanuel Olisadebe followed up his own shot from a corner to crash in a volley in off the underside of the crossbar on 2 minutes and three minutes later the US were pushed to the brink of elimination when Kryszalowicz met a cross to the near post from the left wing to steer the ball high into the net.

A minute earlier Landon Donovan had to appeared to equalize when he headed in a from a corner kick but the goal was ruled out for a push.

The US had some spells of possession but could never impose themselves on a Polish side with nothing to play for.

The Poles went 3-0 up on 67 minutes when substitute Marcin Zewlakov headed in an angled cross after a corner on the left was played short for Olisadebe to drive the bal in towards goal.

Brad Friedel saved his second penalty in three games when he dived to push out a Zurwaski spot kick and Donovan headed in a late consolation after he met a corner in the 83rd minute.

The US now go on to meet familiar rivals Mexico on Monday.
