Scotland did not play desperately badly but France had the skill and power to outclass them with a brilliant start to the game.

New Scotland coach Berti Vogts relied on bringing several younger players into his first line up but they ran into a France side who started very well.

It is hard to judge any side's World Cup chances from friendlies played at half-cock but this Paris game had some vintage action from the champions.

Zinedine Zidane side-stepped Paul Lambert to blast the ball with his left foot to start the rout but France had a fright in the opening minute when Fabien Barthez fluffed a back pass and hit only air with the ball rolling just past the goalmouth.

David Trezeguet scored the first of his brace five minutes after Zidane with a header from close range and Henry set him up for the fourth French goal with a shot on the run with his strikes either side of an excellent finish from Thierry Henry to check a run from a Sylvain Wiltord cross that went just behind his run. The Arsenal star went back on himself and hit a rising shot to finish.

Emmanuel Petit put through Steve Marlet from a slightly deflected finish on the run late in the game to add a fifth goal.
