Inzaghi injury worry for Italy after Totti super show

First Published: May 26, 2002

Striker Filippo Inzaghi injured his left knee in a 2-1 friendly win for Italy over Kashima Antlers in Tokyo.

Inzaghi will have a scan tomorrow to determine the extent of a knee injury sustained in the 29th minute of the game, Italy's final preparatory game ahead of next week's World Cup finals.

"We were worried because he felt the pain in his left knee just as he set up the second goal," said team doctor Andrea Ferretti.

"The knee is not swollen but the pain increased as time went on and now we must wait to see the results of a scan on Monday," Ferretti told reporters but coach Giovanni Trapattoni played down the injury problem and insisted the player would be fit.

AS Roma play maker Francesco Totti starred for the Italians and his free kick produced the first goal in the 13th minute when his corner kick from the left allowed Inzaghi to jump and head in from close range.

Totti set up Inzaghi ten minutes later for strike partner Christian Vieri to receive a pass for a left foot finish.

Alessandro Del Piero was introduced with midfielder Luigi di Biagio for the second half who ended the game very impressively in soaking rain fall after Hirase had equalised when a loose ball in front of goal saw him wrongfoot defenders.

Hirase forced an 88th minute save from substitute goalkeeper Francesco Toldo but Italy's preparations look complete.
